Sadly, my travelling companion was taken ill... ...so our trip was cut short. I had one last delight... ...a trip to the Roman port of Ostia Antica... ...where I feasted on walls... ...and other antique delights.
Oh Siena cathedral, what can I say? I was luck enough to eat lunch gazing on this beautiful facade that looks like it's made from icing sugar. The inside is every bit... ...as magnificent... ...with black and white 'mint humbug' stripes... ...lots of popes... ...an extraordinary pulpit... ...with exquisite carving. I could go on and on...about the doors... ...the paintings... ...the marble pavement... ....the illuminated manuscripts... ...but that wouldn't scratch the surface!
Oh...what to say about Siena? It has to be one of the most glorious... ...beautiful... ...fun... ...places I have ever had the pleasure... ...of visiting. I think it is destined... ...to have a very special place... ...in my heart... ...for years... ...to come. I was lucky enough... ...to have a walk in the early morning... ...and I felt like the city belonged to me. I was so happy that I could gloss over the lack of a decent cuppa... ...and enjoy the wee dragons... ...and breakfast... ...in the Campo. I only wish I'd bought some wild boar socks.... ...and maybe a green bunny... Part of my heart is there still!
As you know, I do like a wall... ....and I'm glad to say… …and Lucca didn’t disappoint… It's a beautiful place full of quirky details, both ancient... ...and modern. Sadly, I only had a morning to explore this beautiful... ...little city... ...although this enticing little bookshop was closed. I hope I have the chance... ...to come back another time... ...and see more of this lovely lace.
