Denver - March 2024

I have been suffering with a very bad cold, and feeling like death warmed up. Not ideal touristing. However, I went into central Denver today. The city was one of the successes of the ‘City Beautiful’ movement in the early 20thC, so has lots of neoclassical facades, and open spaces. I liked this snooty lion… …this splendid salmon… …the mile high marker… …and splendid ironwork. Elsewhere… …hints of the old city… …could be seen… …peeking out by the new. Here’s a lovely telephone exchange… …and an old school. This Women’s History Centre had a delightful… …matching bug house. My main feeling was that of a city at ease with itself… …with a smile… …and a sense of the ridiculous.

Colorado Springs and Woodland Park

We went on a wee road trip today, which included… …a stop off at an excellent bakery… …lunch in Colorado Springs, at the foot of Cheyenne Mountain. My friend Huw tells me that the conspiracy theorists believe it’s where all the ‘space gates’ are. I was indulged in a trip to the dinosaur museum ( https://www.rmdrc.com/ )… …which was pleasingly un-refurbished . However, the star was the scenery. The photos really don’t do it justice. Here are a couple taken my friend Huw… ..who was on the right side of the car :-)

Denver - blue skies and snow

A couple of days before I was due to set off, my host, the Welshman, told me that that had just had 36 hours straight of snow forecast. I’m glad to say that it’s mostly melted… …the sky is blue… …there are buffalo 🦬… EDIT these are bison not buffalo, which reminds me of the old joke: What’s the difference between a bison and a buffalo? You can’t wash your hands in a buffalo. …and mountains.

And we’re off!

After a few months delay… …I have finally left my nest… …jumped on a ‘plane… …and have arrived at my first stop in Denver.
