Amerika

 



Today I took the Staten Island Ferry so I could see the Statue of Liberty from the water. I found her every bit as surreal and beautiful as you would expect.

It brought to mind the beginning of Kafka’s unfinished novel ‘Amerika’:

‘…sunshine seemed to illumine the Statue of Liberty…the arm…rose up as if newly stretched aloft’.

Then I did a Statue of Liberty impersonation. The ice-cream cost $8. I nearly fainted!

Église st Jean Baptiste - Moulins-Engilbert

For a small, sleepy place…Moulins-Engilbert…  …has a very large church. It is… …rather… …lovely… …with lots to see… …beautiful… …carving… …and lovely old wooden pews. And as well… …as these lovely faces… …there are… …some glorious statues in the crypt. However, what most spoke to me was the war memorial… …including my hostˋs grandfather.

We set off early because of the heat… …and to my great delight…had… …the basilica…more or less… …to ourselves… …in calm… …tranquil… ….peace. Do try… …and visit… …if you can. Part of my soul… …is always there.
