The Cable Car Museum, and fun with (retired) firemen

After a couple of pretty ‘car heavy’ days, today I took myself off to…

…the Cable Car Museum…

….which is both free and fascinating.

I was most interested to read about the campaign (mostly conducted by that most formidable of fighters, the retired middle class woman) to retain at least a few cable cars in the 1940s and 1950s.

Then on for an Irish coffee or two…

…well OK three…at the famous Buena Vista.

We fell in with a group of retired firemen on their monthly met up. It was a really joyful affirmation of life to chat with them. Much to my surprise I ended up chatting about Thomas Aquinas, but then, they were all good Catholic boys.

Then some sushi…

…which didn’t counteract all those Irish coffees, so I’ve been snoozing all afternoon!

Corbigny past and present

Itˋs still too damn hot, but I managed a trip out to Corbigny, where there is a lovely toy shop… …interesting mediaeval bits and pieces… …fun shop signs… …a great place to drink coffee and watch the world go by… …suitably mad French cars… …and baffling street furniture… …and a chilling reminder that not that long ago, people like you and me were taken away and annihilated. Remember them, never forget, never again.

Église st Jean Baptiste - Moulins-Engilbert

For a small, sleepy place…Moulins-Engilbert…  …has a very large church. It is… …rather… …lovely… …with lots to see… …beautiful… …carving… …and lovely old wooden pews. And as well… …as these lovely faces… …there are… …some glorious statues in the crypt. However, what most spoke to me was the war memorial… …including my hostˋs grandfather.

Vézelay - one of my favourite places on earth

What is there to say…  …about Vézelay, which hasn’t already been said by better wordsmiths than me? We set off early because of the heat… …and to my great delight…had… …the basilica…more or less… …to ourselves… …in calm… …tranquil… ….peace. Do try… …and visit… …if you can. Part of my soul… …is always there.
